Sawaki is a postman with really nothing very remarkable in his life, pretty much letting time slip by. He's not even a very good postman, as he quite often doesn't even bother delivering his letters. Sometimes he does though, and this leads him to encounter certain characters in the film. First is his old schoolmate, now a Yakuza, then a sick young girl, and then a Hitman named Joe. These meetings trigger different chains of events that eventually come together.

Sawaki est facteur à Tokyo. Son travail répétitif et son existence solitaire lui collent le blues. Quand il tombe sur Noguchi, un ancien camarade de classe devenu yakuza (petit mafieux), il découvre une uatre vie qui lui semble plus excitante que la sienne. Rentré chez lui, il se saoule et ouvre les lettres de sa sacoche. Il s'éprend de l'expéditrice de l'une des lettres. A la recherche de la jeune fille, il fait une nouvelle rencontre, celle de Joe, un tueur à gages mélancolique, lui aussi gravement malade. Tout cela sous la surveillance de la police qui se persuade de tenir en Sawaki un dangereux dealer et terroriste...
